Why We Exist

Many communities are experiencing the same challenges.

People feel increasingly disconnected from one another. Local wealth and decision-making are often extracted from communities. Access to land is becoming more difficult. Environmental and social challenges continue to grow, while many people struggle to find meaningful ways to contribute.

At the same time, communities are full of knowledge, skills, ideas, and goodwill.

What is often missing is the infrastructure and an intermediary that helps people come together around a shared purpose and turn good intentions into collective action.

Yarn & Yield exists to provide that infrastructure, acting as a regenerative intermediary.

What is Yarn & Yield?

Yarn & Yield is a community cooperative that helps people connect, learn, and create together.

Our role is to support the relationships, learning, coordination, and enterprise development that enable community-led regeneration to emerge and thrive.

We bring people together around shared purpose, support the development of new ideas and enterprises, and create opportunities for people to contribute their skills, knowledge, resources, and experience toward building stronger communities.

Rather than delivering solutions to communities, we help communities create solutions together.

How People Participate

There are many ways to participate in the Yarn & Yield ecosystem.

Connect

Build relationships through gatherings, events, conversations, and shared experiences.

Learn

Develop regenerative literacy, practical skills, and new ways of thinking through workshops, learning circles, and knowledge sharing.

Create

Develop projects, enterprises, and initiatives that contribute to community wellbeing and regeneration.

Steward

Contribute time, resources, expertise, leadership, or financial support to help strengthen the ecosystem and secure it for future generations.

How Our Model Works

Regeneration requires both social infrastructure and physical infrastructure.

The social infrastructure comes from people, relationships, knowledge, and enterprise.

The physical infrastructure comes from land and community assets that provide a place for regeneration to take root.

Yarn & Yield brings these elements together through a simple process:

1. Partner with Landowners

We begin by partnering with private landowners through lease-to-buy agreements.

This allows community activities, learning programs, enterprise development, and land stewardship to begin immediately without needing to purchase land upfront.

2. Create Community Benefit

Through connection, learning, enterprise development, and collaborative projects, communities begin creating social, environmental, cultural, and economic value.

Trust is built. Relationships deepen. New enterprises emerge. Community benefit becomes visible and tangible.

3. Secure What Has Been Created

As contribution and impact grow, the community is invited to help secure the land and community assets that support the work into a land trust.

Funds are raised through donations, philanthropy, grants, impact investment, and community contributions.

Land and significant community assets are then transferred into a Land Trust, where they can be protected for future generations.

In this way, community benefit is created first and secured second.

The Role of the Land Trust

The Land Trust exists to hold land and significant community assets in stewardship for current and future generations.

Its purpose is to ensure that land, infrastructure, and community-created value remain dedicated to community benefit and cannot be extracted for private gain.

The Land Trust provides long-term stability and protection.

It does not operate programs, run enterprises, or manage day-to-day activities.

Its role is stewardship.

The Role Yarn and Yield

Yarn & Yield is the operational arm of the Land Trust.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Land Trust, Yarn & Yield is responsible for activating the land and advancing the ecosystem’s shared purpose.

This includes:

community building and participation
learning and regenerative literacy
enterprise development and incubation
partnerships and collaboration
land activation and stewardship activities
governance and coordination

Yarn & Yield creates the conditions that allow people, projects, and enterprises to flourish.

Community Benefit Enterprises

As communities grow, new enterprises and initiatives emerge.

These may include regenerative agriculture enterprises, education programs, wellbeing initiatives, food systems projects, creative ventures, circular economy enterprises, and other community-led activities across our three branches: connection, knowledge and practice.

These enterprises remain locally owned and operated while contributing to the broader purpose of community regeneration.

Together they create livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and generate lasting community benefit.

A Mycelium of Regenerative Communities

Our ambition is not to create a single site. Our ambition is to create a living network of regenerative communities.

As new landowners seek succession pathways and more communities want to participate, Yarn & Yield will establish new lease-to-buy partnerships on additional properties. The Land Trust continues to acquire land as community support grows.

Importantly, we do not duplicate the model by creating new cooperatives and new foundations for every site. Instead, a single cooperative and a single Land Trust to support a growing network of places and spaces.

Each new property becomes part of a larger ecosystem. Each community retains its local character and autonomy while benefiting from shared knowledge, relationships, governance, resources, and support.

Over time, this creates a mycelium of interconnected lands, communities, enterprises, and people.

Land is held in stewardship by the Land Trust. Communities are supported by Yarn & Yield.

Enterprises create value and community benefit. Knowledge flows across the network. Resources circulate where they are needed. Success in one place strengthens the whole system.

Our Long Term Vision

We are building more than a cooperative, a land trust, or a collection of enterprises.

We are building the foundations for a regenerative future.

A future where land is stewarded rather than owned, where enterprises create community benefit, where knowledge is shared, land is cared for, and communities actively participate in shaping the places they call home.

A future where what is created today can continue to serve generations to come, creating a living legacy.
